Council has completed a detailed feasibility study into Northern Link – a proposed toll road tunnel connecting the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove.
Northern Link is a proposed 5km underground toll road which will connect the Western Freeway at Toowong to the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove.
The project will comprise twin, two-lane tunnels, approximately 5km in length which will run straight through between Toowong and Kelvin Grove.
Northern Link is the fourth project is Council's TransApex plan designed to reduce congestion on Brisbane's road network.
Northern Link will operate as a user-pays system, which will require road users to pay a toll each time they use the tunnel. Tolls collected will allow Council to recover the cost of constructing the tunnel and contribute to its ongoing maintenance and operation.
Construction on Northern Link could commence as early as December 2010. As a result, Northern Link is on track to open by late 2014, ahead of the scheduled completion date of 2016.
