ABOUT THE PROJECT
The bikeway is Brisbane city’s busiest pathway and an important cycle and pedestrian link. Running along the Brisbane River and connecting the CBD to Toowong, each day it carries more than 4000 pedestrians and cyclists.  Brisbane City Council is progressively upgrading Bicentennnial Bikeway. Stage One included upgrades to the pathway between Cribb Street and Park Road, Milton, and was completed in August 2009.  Stage Two will involve upgrading the section of bikeway between (approximately 500 metres).

Construction of Stage Two began in April 2010 and is expected to be completed in August 2010, weather permitting.  The project is part of a broader project to separate pedestrians and cyclists for the entire length of Bicentennial bikeway. Further upgrades to the pathway will be undertaken by Council and the Hale Street Link Alliance in the future.

The project is part of the Lord Mayor’s vision for active transport in Brisbane and is outlined in South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program 2008 – 2026. Part of the funding for the project was received from the State Government.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
The upgrade will provide an improved facility with separated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians and includes a 3.5m wide cycle path and a 2m wide pedestrian path.

IMPACTS DURING CONSTRUCTION

  • To maintain safety during construction, a new temporary side track has been constructed between Lang Parade and Land Street, adjacent to the river.
  • Initially construction work was being completed Monday to Saturday between 7am and 5pm. To enable work to be completed as soon as possible, construction work will now be undertaken seven days a week between 7am and 5pm, with some night works as required.
  • During construction hours pedestrians can use the footpath on the inbound side of Coronation Drive.   Access is via the:
    -  Coronation Drive/Sylvan Road intersection
    -  Oxley Wharf tunnel/underpass
    -  Coronation Drive/Graham Street intersection.
Outside of construction hours pedestrians can use the temporary shared side track, adjacent to the river.
