Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7)

Formerly known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel, CLEM7 will link the Pacific Motorway (M3) and Ipswich Road at Woolloongabba to Lutwyche Road and the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at Bowen Hills. A connection to Shafston Avenue at Kangaroo Point will provide access to the eastern suburbs. Due for completion in 2010, it includes two separate 4.8km tunnels which travel up to 60m below the Brisbane River, with two lanes of traffic in each direction.

This link will:

  • provide a new river crossing
  • allow motorists to save 15 minutes on a cross-city trip
  • allow motorists to avoid up to 18 sets of traffic lights
  • reduce inner-city traffic
  • be the lowest priced toll tunnel per kilometre in Australia
  • carry approximately 78,020 vehicles per day in 2016.

Airport Link Tunnel

Airport Link will extend north from Bowen Hills connecting the ICB, NSBT and city to Stafford Road, Sandgate Road, Gympie Road and the East-West Arterial. Delivery of the Council-initiated 6.7km long twin dual-lane tunnels is now being led by the Queensland Government and is due for completion in 2012. It will:

  • provide a high-speed link between the CBD and the airport
  • allow motorists to travel between Bowen Hills and the airport roundabout in six minutes in off-peak periods
  • save motorists about seven minutes on a trip from Chermside to Fortitude Valley during the morning peak in 2012
  • save motorists about four minutes on a trip from Stafford to Hendra in 2012
  • save motorists about six minutes on a trip from Hendra to Milton in 2012
  • carry approximately 93,000 vehicles in the north-south tunnels and 26,000 vehicles in the east-west tunnels per day in 2026.

Hale Street Link Bridge

Hale Street Link is a cross-river connection between Hale Street at Milton and Cordelia and Merivale Streets and Montague Road at South Brisbane. Due to open in mid-2010, it will:

  • provide public transport, pedestrian and cycle opportunities
  • allow motorists travelling to South Brisbane to avoid up to four sets of traffic lights between the ICB or Milton Road and the Peel/Merivale Street intersection or Montague Road
  • allow motorists travelling north from South Brisbane to avoid up to six sets of traffic lights between Peel/Cordelia Streets intersection or Montague Road to the ICB or Milton Road
  • carry up to 21,000 vehicles per day in 2021
  • support future residential development and urban renewal
  • provide four additional traffic lanes, a pedestrian path and cycle link across the Brisbane River to increase accessibility to some of Brisbane's popular recreational, cultural and educational precincts.

Northern Link Tunnel

Northern Link is a proposed tunnel linking the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove. It will consist of two separate dual-lane tunnels about 4km long. Council is fully committed to delivering Northern Link ahead of the scheduled completion date of 2016. The link will:

  • remove freight vehicles from surface roads
  • provide opportunities for express bus routes from the western suburbs into the CBD
  • allow traffic to avoid at least seven sets of traffic lights between the Western Freeway and the ICB
  • reduce traffic on Milton Road and Coronation Drive, and reduce through traffic on some local streets
  • enhance pedestrian and cycle networks
  • carry about 40,000-50,000 vehicles per day by 2026.

East-West Link

The East-West Link is a proposed cross-river tunnel linking the Pacific Motorway and O'Keefe Street at Buranda with the Western Freeway and Toowong. This link will:

  • offer suburbs west of the Central Business District an alternative for cross-town travel, relieving traffic congestion on the Captain Cook and Walter Taylor bridges
  • improve travel for main trip generators on both sides of the river, including Toowong, Indooroopilly and the University of Queensland at St Lucia in the west and Woolloongabba, Princess Alexandra Hospital and Boggo Road in the east
  • cater for low traffic volumes – about 20,000 vehicles per day in 2021.

The TransApex prefeasibility study found the East-West Link should be viewed as a project post 2026 with a review of traffic demand in 2011.
