CLEM7 tunneling complete

28/08/2009 - Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7)

A major milestone for the CLEM7 tunnel has been reached with Matilda the tunnel boring machine completing her 4.3km journey underneath Brisbane recently.

Tunnelling for the CLEM7 between Bowen Hills and Woolloongabba is complete after the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Matilda’ broke through at the southern end on 26 May 2009.

Matilda arrived at Woolloongabba just over five weeks after her sister Florence, which broke through on April 16.

During their journeys, both Matilda and Florence excavated over 1.3 million tonnes of rock and installed 19,000 tunnel lining segments.

Workers will now fit out about 45 kilometres of water mains, along with 120 ceiling mounted fans, 165 emergency phones, 2000 lights and almost 200 kilometres of electrical cabling
